In 1999, OHSAS 18001 became the most prestigious
management system superceding guidance documents such as BS 8800
and other propriety certification body documents for HSMS certification.
OHSAS 18001was developed following the international
success of the ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 : 2004 series of standards.
Today, a business without an effective Health &
Safety management system is at risk. Companies are penalized not
only from the loss in productive working hours, but also by the
cost of liability and increased insurance premiums.
In 2004 the Health & Safety Executive announced
their intention to increase their site visits to raise awareness.
Their report in 2002/3 reported that there were over 150,000 work
related injuries.
OHSAS 18001 is a standard recognized around the
world. It can be applied to any type of industry and business.
